- If you rotate it without editing the coin like done in this photo, it doesn’t actually look like what they describe at all… - It isn’t just me right? The coin on the right (upper one in my image) looks edited. (I can still see it tough.)  - I’m gonna say the direction of the shadow helps sell the illusion of sun overhead - This is exactly it. The shadows are slightly different based on the fact that the light source hasn’t rotated with the coin.  - This is a clearer image and it definitely helps pick out the little details. 
 
- No it’s very edited to reinforce the observation they want you to make. - That sounds like flat earth logic to me!
