I had a Lemmy user call me a liar because I said I was born in a country bombed and couped by Americans, apparently the 1980s have been forgotten, or education is so bad that young people really are ignorant about the atrocities their country has committed. I’ve been banned from Lemmy communities for being “racist towards Americans” when I call out that they’re a terrorist nation. American isn’t a race. And telling Americans they wrecked my country isn’t racism

The average Lemmy user was born after 9-11 and thinks that was probably staged like the moon landing. I wouldn’t take it too seriously.

Even many Americans would agree that their country have been a terrorist state. But as for getting banned, it depends how you phrased your criticisms.

Yeah, I also came from a country that was a former US colony. I would not run out criticism of US government policies and their elites, and I always say that Trump is merely showing the true face of America. But I would not generalise most or every Americans as fascists, same way as I criticise Russia but not all of its people. I’m just an anti-imperialist and I would happily see imperialist ruling class choke and fall from their own hubris, but I would not wish the worst on ordinary honest people except on those who consciously support imperialism.

I can confirm that, at least for me, these things aren’t taught. I only learned about them when visiting the affected countries.
