I’ve never been a huge fan of this joke, because way too often it is being used by bigots to justify their bigotry.

There really isn’t anything wholesome about it. Besides it being ageist, it suffers from serious main character fallacy. Stop thinking you are going to be Tolkien, be proud of who you are instead.
Sure, but that is a low bar to set for yourself.
But you have to remember: “both sides!”.
