I really don’t want to get into it over something that I don’t have any influence on tbh. There are a lot of things that I could rightly point out as issues ,but if people haven’t been willing to listen to the hundreds of people that have said the exact same things that I would say, I just don’t see the point. GIMP will keep on being GIMP and thats fine.

Vendor lock-in is bad and Adobe’s business practices are bad, no matter how you cook it. There are so many viable alternatives to Adobe stuff.

    I agree with this.

Problem is, Photoshop power users don’t often want to hear about any alternatives. GIMP is just one of the most popular culprits in this regard. That’s exactly the kind of mindset that the vendor lock-in creates.

This I somewhat agree with. I think that a lot of the problem is with who you suggest what to though. Someone who edits photos all day on PS isn’t going to like gimp for a different set of reasons than someone who does digital art. Krita is great for digital art can’t speak to photo editing because I haven’t done nearly as much of it.

I’m kind of happy that I stuck with GIMP when I was younger. Now, I have absolutely no fear of trying out any software that comes my way. I do most of my photo work in Affinity Photo. Don’t have problems with GIMP either, use it for some other stuff.

Its good that you did that but most people who make their living from having a specific skill set don’t really have the time to figure out which of the 13 different FOSS photo editors work for them after they are recommend one that they try and is just not suitable for their needs.

The only way to get people to switch from Adobe is to wait for Adobe to make the life unbearable for their own customers. Some time ago there was a huge movement for people to switch from Premiere to DaVinci Resolve because Premiere really is pretty horrible these days.

Completely agree here. They need to do something that is worth the 1000s of hours to learn a new program instead of just sticking with the one that is familiar.

Can we use an example that isn’t so much worse that people feel insulted when you tell them to use it. Telling someone that uses Photoshop as part of their job to use GIMP is genuinely insulting. There are so many other examples that could be used where the FOSS alternatives are almost as good or better than the industry standard. You choose the one example where the FOSS alternative just is not usable for the industry.

Thats really unfortunate. Hardware support on linux is really hit or miss and until it is seen as a worth while investment to make sure that products work well on linux by the manufacturers it will remain that way but I can not fault anyone for going back to windows when things on their system just will not work.

People really do refuse to understand that telling someone to read x section of a manual is not that same as here is a manual that I haven’t checked to make sure actually contains the information you are looking for, good luck come back if you’ve read it three times and its actually not in there.

Don’t go onto forums that are specifically to help people if you don’t have the time then. Or at the very least don’t link the whole 10000 word manual and give me a specific place to look because I promise if I have overcome my anxiety of looking stupid enough to post on the forum I have checked the manual multiple times.

  • I was never a “main friend” in any of the groups I interacted with. I hung out with a lot of people on a very shallow level. When covid hit I stopped talking to all of them. it was nearly a year of me only seeing my parents and sibling because a family member is immunocompromised. I still struggle to make real connections after that and I was at the end of highschool. If that had hit in middleschool when I was still taking “cool” seeming peoples sord as gossiple I have known idea what it would have done to me.
