I’d love to be able to ask directly, but my fear is they’ll treat me differently after I ask. It’s already happened once to me; a friend stopped hanging out with me for a while (I think that’s fixed now, but it lasted months). I feel a bit safer about it around autistic people though, because I’m pretty sure a rejection would be just a “no” and then we proceed like nothing happened.

Given the demographics of Linux devs, it probably would be the latter.

Nobody’s forcing you to, nobody’s yelling at you, if you don’t do it it’s not a massive deal, you’re just yelling at clouds. Actually that’s not entirely true; I’m yelling at you because of your absurd overreaction to the mere idea of being a little thoughtful.

I don’t know if you got it from media, or you heard about this movement and for some reason immediately jumped to “they’re forcing us!”, but you really need to do some self reflection on why you got it so wrong and why you were so quick to do this outburst.

I see mostly people defending master starting arguments. I’ve never seen anyone pushing for main get even half as mad as some of the people coming up with a reason why it’s stupid. Like, holy shit guys, just don’t change it and move on, why be so mad about it?

My keys were fine, I’d used them on a previous system. My best guess is boot failed because GPU firmware wasn’t signed with my keys, only Microsoft’s keys. And of course, I can’t just CMOS clear, and I don’t have an iGPU. It’s crazy that an OS can brick my motherboard; I’d be a lot more forgiving if a BIOS option bricked it, but exposing a “brick me” option in efivars for any ring 0 software to press??

What? Nova is a rewrite of Nouveau from scratch by Redhat devs to better support newer cards.

Specifically in the Linux kernel, the 2 big reasons to use it are memory safety (huuuuggee benefit) and that a lot of younger devs like it and thus it will attract their contributions.

The only reasons I can think of to not use it are that some people want their own toolchain and having multiple languages in the kernel adds complication. But tbh, none of that justifies banning Rust stuff that realistically wouldn’t have been written at all if C were the only option.

And then there’s the people who show up in Phoronix, HN, Reddit, and YouTube comments saying Rust is over-hyped without showing why it’s unfit for purpose and also trying to dictate what someone does with their own project. Perhaps it’s something to do with the representation of queer people and other minorities in the Rust community, because otherwise I do not understand why people would be sooo passionate in hating the Rust community like the group I described above is.

It matters to potential contributors. It’s also a floating signifier for a lot of things.
