I’m not the person you responded to but, I also run with down-votes disabled. I found that paying attention to them was negatively impacting the platform and creating an echo chamber based off populous opinion. Since turning them off, my experience on the platform has been quite a bit more enjoyable. It’s not that I really have a mentality that is different than what the populous opinion is but, I much prefer not seeing them as it removes the potential of “oh this post has been downvoted” because that makes you go into reading it with an already poisoned mindset.
I totally understand where this is coming from but I started on an instance that doesn’t have down votes and moved to a different one because I wanted to see when I’m downvoted. More often than not it is because I was misunderstood and even if not, I want to know where I am. I remember a discussion where I later realized I was heavily downvoted and would have “read the room” better if I knew (time proved me right after all but I digress)
I can definitely understand that as well. I rely on someone replying to the comment if I say something that is unclear or misinterpreted. It allows me to have better feedback anyway then trying to figure out where I went wrong on my own, plus it avoids being able to dismiss it as “well maybe it was just a unpopular opinion so it was downvoted”. I also find effort a huge factor as well, meaning that if someone went through the hassle/effort of responding to my comment then chances are it’s not an opinion type deal and more of either I wasn’t clear or there was a misunderstanding. (when the reply is opposing of course)
I first thought you equated being down voted with being banned but your point was that being banned for down votes illustrate your point that Lemmy isn’t better than reddit.
I mean, an opinion may unpopular but not necessarily evil (offensive/racist/sexist etc.). Often times, also not-evil unpopular opinions are just silenced (downvoted to hell) without any discussion.
The donwotes you mention (and that I can’t see, because I disabled them in settings) perfectly demonstrate my point.
I was hopeful some form of reddiquette would be revived here but that lasted about 3 months past the API changes.
How so? Are you a free speech absolutist who feels threatened when other people use their freedom of speech?

Are you equating votes to speech? To me votes are the opposite of that. They are just a lazy shortcut.
That said, you can use your freedom of speech with me at your will. Until I find you boring enough to just silence you (aka, block).
So what is your point? What makes downvotes so bad?
Can’t you read?
I first thought you equated being down voted with being banned but your point was that being banned for down votes illustrate your point that Lemmy isn’t better than reddit.
Exactly. At the end of the day, “unpopular” opinions just get silenced, even if harmless (if you aren’t on some unpopularopinon sub, of course).
So you want unpopular opinions to be reacted to?
