Only because it is fermented in the can so it’s slightly pressurized, opening under water prevents mess. People really overstate the smell, same as all the people that post videos of gagging and retching over natto or durian.

Not really, no. Someone once opened a can about a hundred meters (roughly 300 feet afaik) from the building I lived in and I could clearly smell it. From my second floor apartment. With all my windows closed.
